The Workbooks Project
The purpose of the Workbooks Project is to sustain PLTL Programs by publishing workbooks and creating a means of funding.
How does it work? The Workbooks Project draws on learning materials authored by PLTL practitioners. These include instructors, Peer Leaders, and learning specialists. The materials represent intellectual property (IP). The IP is donated to the Peer-Led Team Learning International Society, a non-profit, which publishes the materials as workbooks. The workbooks can be sold through various distribution channels. The revenue after expenses can then be donated to a university Gift Fund, with the Gift Fund providing a cost center used for paying for PLTL program costs. These costs might include payments for Peer Leaders, supporting staff to coordinate the program, or travel costs for Peer Leaders to attend conferences.
How does The Workbooks Project function? Practitioners from all disciplines share their materials and as authors assign ownership rights to PLTLIS and receive authorship credit. Revenue over costs is shared by PLTLIS to support program costs and sustain programs, e.g. to hire and pay a coordinator, pay Leaders, send Leaders to conferences. Workbooks are advertised and available through PLTLIS.
What is Peer-Led Team Learning? Students enroll in lecture and must co-register in required, small-section PLTL Workshops. The learning in each workshop is facilitated by an undergraduate Peer Leader, a student who has done well in the course and has been trained for the purpose. Workbooks can organize the content of the PLTL Workshops, provide content sequence for faculty lecturers, and significantly fund the program. Find out more about PLTL at www.pltlis.org.
